David Smith

David was appointed Chief Experience Officer and General Manager of the Peninsula Heart Clinic in 2019.

Before joining Peninsula Heart Clinic he was the General Manager Theatres, Critical Care and Anaesthetics Care Group Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust. He led this division across three hospital sites, and in the absence of a Clinical Director he also stepped up to lead the care group. Previous to this he was the Head of Operational Delivery at Taunton & Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.

David has worked as a healthcare manger since 2001. He has extensive senior management experience leading and managing surgical services, initially in the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC), and then in the NHS and private sector.

Before joining the NHS, David served in the RAMC for fifteen years. His RAMC career involved managing operating theatres, sterile supply units and associated services. He trained as an advanced surgical practitioner in surgery to support and assist the surgeon and close up after surgical procedures. The highlight of this time was managing Berlin Military Hospital’s 20 operating staff across four operating theatres just as the cold war years were ending. He therefore brings a crucial clinical perspective to his management style.

He previously worked at University Hospitals Plymouth as their cardiac manager (2001-2004) and then became deputy directorate manager of cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology in 2006.

David is an ambitious and determined leader who is stimulated by problems and solves them in a creative and analytical style. He understands the importance of managing people to maximise their potential and has long term vision tempered by high standards of competence and performance.
