Dr John-Paul Carpenter is a consultant cardiologist based at Poole Hospital, Nuffield Bournemouth, and the Dorset Heart Clinic.

 

His practice involves all areas of cardiology with particular focus on cardiac imaging and cardio-oncology (cardiovascular health issues for patients with cancer). His main areas of interest are non-invasive assessment, cardiac MRI, cardiac CT, stress testing and advanced echocardiography.

At Univeristy Hospitals Dorset (Poole and Bournemouth Hospitals), Dr Carpenter leads the the ongoing development of a comprehensive local cardiac imaging service. Prior to taking up his post in Poole in 2013, he was a consultant in cardiovascular MRI, inherited cardiac diseases, and cardio-oncology at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London where he helped to establish the specialist cardio-oncology service.

Dr Carpenter graduated from Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospitals in London in 1996 before pursuing a career in cardiology. In 2007, he undertook a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded research fellowship at the Royal Brompton Hospital, followed by a clinical fellowship in imaging and heart failure at University Hospitals Southampton.

His research interests include non-invasive imaging, specifically cardiac MRI, with a focus on conditions that lead to cardiac iron overload. He has been an invited speaker at numerous conferences, both local and international, teaching and training others in North and South America, Europe and Asia.

 

He is the Chair of the European Examination Board for cardiac MRI and Vice-Chair of Imaging Certification for the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging.

 

He is the current Training Programme Director for Cardiology for NHS Health Education England (Wessex Region). He was also a founding member of the British Cardio-Oncology Society.
